In a shocking incident, at least nine newborns reportedly died at the government hospital at Asarwa locality in Ahmedabad in 24 hours on Saturday.
It was reported that the newborns were born premature and took their last breath at Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
Dr. M M Prabhakar, Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital said in a statement, “Since most of the private doctors were not working during the Diwali break, the cases were referred to the hospital. Most of these children were underweight, each weighing less than 1 kg. I can assure you there is nothing wrong with our oxygen or incubators”.
Following this, five of them were shifted to another hospital.
Adding further to this he said, “Similarly, the patient referred from Viramgam was first taken to two private hospitals in Viramgam and Chandkheda in Ahmedabad and then brought here”.
While the hospital authorities are denying the reports that the newborns died due to the absence of doctors and said, “We always have doctors present 24 hours”.
