BTech student sentenced 5 years behind bars for revenge porn

Kolkata: A court in Tamluk of Purba Medinipur sentenced a third year BTech student to five years in prison and fined Rs 9000 for revenge porn.

He was found to have uploaded private photographs and videos of a girl he knew over the internet. A Judicial magistrate Gautam Kumar Nag ordered to treat the girl as a rape survivor.

The accused Animesh Boxi hails from Panskura.

Advocate, Bivas Chatterjee said that the complaint was lodged and accused was arrested on July 21, 2017, proceedings got over on February 28, 2018. He appointed a special public prosecutor while CID took up the investigation.

CID submitted a charge-sheet against the accused in 8 weeks. The framed the charges after a week while witness examination took another two months.

Eighteen witnesses were presented before the court. Central forensic science laboratory experts submitted their finding.

The girl in her complaint said that she knew the accused for last three years and trusted him. He took out some of the private pictures and videos with a promise to marry her. He threatened her to upload it over the internet if she didn’t have physical relations with him. When she refused, the accused uploaded the pictures.

The victim told the court that this was revenge pornography. Her modesty was outraged every time her private pictures and videos were seen virtually.

Chatterjee said that the girl, who was devastated by the incident, regained composure and fought back. She withstood two days of rigorous cross-examination and gave clear and honest evidence in the court.

“This is the first conviction in the state in such a case,” he added.
