Iraq Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim al-Jaafari has arrived in New Delhi on Monday morning. The Iraq Foreign Minister is on a five-day visit to India.
It was reported that the Iraqi minister will meet External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to discuss the bilateral relations between both the countries, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest at the Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan.
Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, “India and Iraq have historically enjoyed close and friendly political, economic and cultural ties. Our robust bilateral trade amounted to nearly US$ 13 billion in 2016-17. Iraq contributes significantly to India’s energy security and is the second-largest supplier of crude oil to us (over 37 MMT during 2016-17). Thousands of Indians visit Iraq annually for a pilgrimage to the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala”.
Although, the main agenda t to hold a discussion will focus on the 39 Indians kidnapped by the Islamic State from Iraq’s Mosul three years back.
However, during the 5-day visit in India, Iraq Foreign Minister will attend a program in Mumbai.
