The Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party (SP) stunned BJP by winning Phulpur and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seats. In Phulpur SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel registered an astonishing victory with a margin of over 59613 votes over Kaushalendra Singh Patel.

The Akhilesh led party also won the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat as Praveen Nishad defeated BJP’s Upendra Shukla by 21000 votes.

A controversy operated in Gorakhpur after reports that media was barred from entering the counting center. There was a ruckus in the UP Assembly that led to a temporary adjournment. However, ECI official said the media was being briefed personally by the DM after each round’s progress.

The voter turnout was 47.45 percent in Gorakhpur and 37.39 percent in Phulpur in Sunday’s polling.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath necessitated the bypolls after Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya vacated the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats following their election to the state legislative council. Aditya Nath has represented Gorakhpur in the Lok Sabha five times.

Reflecting on the by-poll verdict, Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath said,” We accept the verdict of the people, this result is unexpected, we will review the shortcomings.

Mamata Banerjee and Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to congratulate Akhilesh Yadav and Mayavati on the victory.
