Maharashtra: Man arrested for calling woman “Chammak Challo”

Yes, you read it right!! The famous song from the movie Ra.One- “Chammak Challo” which is generally used to describe a woman has landed a man from Thane, Maharashtra in jail.

It was reported as Chammak Challo is the term which is used for a girl who is flashy in appearance.

According to Thane court, it is referred as “insulting a woman’s modesty”.

The man allegedly called a woman by the term Chammak Challo and demeans a woman and caused anger. The accused is booked under Section 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), the court said.

The magistrate said in his order, “It is a Hindi word. There is no word for it in English. The said word is to be understood in the Indian society by its use. Generally, this word is used to insult a woman. It is not a word for appreciating… it causes irritation and anger to any woman”.

The court has fined him only Re 1 and imprisonment till the court rises.

According to the woman, on January 9, 2009 while she was returning from a morning walk, the man allegedly called the woman “chhammak chhallo”, while she was returning with her husband.

The judge said in his statement, “The words ‘chammak challo’ are Hindi words, and there are no such words in English. Also, the words are to be understood in Indian society by their use. Generally, they are used to insult a woman. They are not words appreciating a woman. When used, they cause irritation and anger to any woman. Therefore, the words amount to insulting the modesty of a woman, attract section 509 of the IPC”.
