Man sentenced to 10 years prison on rape charges

A man was reportedly sent to prison for 10 years on the charges of raping a woman and making her pregnant.

The Chandigarh district court sentenced a 27-year-old man to 10 years in prison for raping a 19-year-old girl in 2016. The convict, Ajay Kumar was also fined Rs 1.07 lakh.

In Additional District Judge court, Poonam R Joshi. sentenced him to imprisonment under the section 376(2) and 506. The police had earlier booked him on rape charges after the victim registered a case on September 2. 2016.

The victim alleged that she came to Chandigarh in 2014 and befriended a girl in her neighbourhood. One day when she went to meet her, she met the accused who is the brother of her friend. He took her to a room, pointed a knife at her and then raped her. He intimidated her if she spoke it to anyone.

She also said that he met her in a market and said that he would share her private photos if she did not come to meet her. On that ground, Ajay continued to rape her for another two years.

The matter came to light when she got pregnant. She then told the entire ordeal to her mother who approached his family. Ajay assured her of marrying her.

After a few days, the victim found out that he was already married. She then lodged a complaint with the police and a case was registered against Ajay Kumar at Mauli Jagran police station. She later aborted the child after an approval from the court.
