In a tragic incident, over two people died and several others are reportedly missing after a Portuguese-era bridge which connects Sanvordem and Curchorem villages in the South Goa collapsed on Thursday evening.

It was reported that the incident took place when around 50 people were standing and watching the woman who allegedly jumped into the river to commit suicide.

A police official said in a statement, “Around 50 people had gathered on the bridge to watch the rescue operation, and all of them fell into the river as it collapsed”.

Meanwhile showing concern over the incident, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, “Spoke to Goa CM … regarding the bridge collapse on Sanvordem river. Search and rescue operations have been intensified”.

However, this is not the first incident where the bridge which interconnects two ways reportedly collapse. Earlier also, a bridge over Savitri River on the Mumbai-Goa highway collapsed and takes lives of several people.
