Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was elected as a president of the Congress party on Monday.
Sonia Gandhi handed over the party responsibility to his son and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi after heading the Indian National Congress for 19 years.
While confirming the news, senior party leader Mullappally Ramachandran said at a press conference in New Delhi.
He said, “I hereby declare Shri Rahul Gandhi elected as the president of the Indian National Congress”.
It was reported that Rahul Gandhi will be the fifth person from the Gandhi family to head the oldest political party.
Adding further to this, Mullappally Ramachandran said, “Since the withdrawal of date/time is over and as there is only one candidate (Rahul), as per Article XVII (d) of the Constitution of Indian National Congress, I hereby declare Shri Rahul Gandhi elected as president of the Indian National Congress”.
Rahul Gandhi has taken over the party’s vice-president in January 2013.
While congratulating the new Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved to Twitter and wrote: “I congratulate Rahul Ji on his election as Congress President. My best wishes for a fruitful tenure”.
While Rahul Gandhi replied, “A heartfelt thank you to everyone for the tremendous support and good wishes you have showered on me. It is an honour for me to work for the ideals of the Congress party and through it for our great country”.
