A Jodhpur court on Thursday convicted Salman Khan in a two-decade-old blackbuck poaching case and announced 5 year jail term while his other co-stars Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Saif Ali Khan from ‘Hum Sath Sath Hain’ were acquitted.
Khan was accused of killing two blackbucks in Kankani village during the shoot of the above-mentioned film.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri pronounced the verdict. He called the actor a ‘habitual offender’. Salman and other actors were present in the court at the time of the verdict. Others were given benefit of the doubt.
Earlier today, arguments on the punishment were underway. Khan’s lawyers argued for probation and pleading to a minimum sentence. The quantum of punishments decided after court resumed.
52-year-old Khan could have been sentenced for six years in prison as he faces charges under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act. The others were charged under Section 51 read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC.
It was a long battle between the Bishnoi community who are committed to protecting the species and the Bollywood stars.
Final arguments were concluded on March 28.
The incident happened during the shoot of Sooraj Barjatya’s family drama, ‘Hum Sath Sath Hain’, a super hit movie of the era.
Salman was last seen in Tinger Zinda Hai released in December. His next movie will be Race 3 that will release in June. The sentence will affect the movie industry as he is part of the multiple upcoming movies like Kick 2 and Dabangg 3.
