Sri Lanka: Navy arrests eight Tamil Nadu fishermen

As per the news agencies, at least eight fishermen were reportedly arrested and their boats were allegedly seized by the Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday.

A fisheries department official said in a statement, “ Eight Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested today by the Sri Lankan Navy when they were allegedly fishing near the Lankan coast”.

The arrested fishermen were reportedly taken with their boat to the Karainagar port, Rameswaram fisheries department assistant director N Manikandan said.

The fishermen were taken to the Kankesanthurai Naval Camp for further interrogation.

It was reported that the fishermen who hails from Rameswaram district, Tamil Nadu were allegedly arrested when they were fishing near Neduntheevu.

Later, they were taken to Karainagar port in northern Sri Lanka, Assistant Directors of Fisheries in Rameswaram said.

Although, the arrest of the Tamil Nadu fishermen came when the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is visiting Sri Lanka’s capital to participate in the two-day Indian Ocean Conference which will commence from today.

This is the not the first instance where Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended the Tamil Nadu fishermen, earlier on August 14, Sri Lankan Navy allegedly arrested four Tamil Nadu fishermen along with their boat near Punkudi Island.
