A 15-year-old teenager was allegedly raped in a bus by two drivers and a conductor in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district, the police said.
The incident reminds the dark memories of the 2012 Nirbahaya gang-rape case in which a 23-year-old girl was raped in a moving bus in Delhi.
Police says the girl, who had completed Class IX this year, fled from home in Salem and boarded the bus on Monday afternoon. She remained on the bus for six to seven hours as it made few outings from Salem to Omalur around 20 kilometres away and back.
After the last trip, the driver stopped the bus in an isolated area around seven kilometres away from Omalur and allegedly sexually ambushed the girl one after the other, police said.
An officer said, “The girl says the men threatened her to not get off the bus. She got away and shouted when the third man assaulted her sexually. Nearby people rescued her and handed over the men.”
The parents of the teenager are every day wage workers in Salem. Police say the girl, a Dalit, had fled from home twice before too.
As per the sources say the girl is being counselled and taken care of at a children’s home. It’s uncertain whether she underwent any medical examination so until now. Senior officers couldn’t be reached for more information.
A case has been lodged under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and Prevention of SC/ST Atrocities Act besides invoking provisions of kidnap, rape, intimidation and attempt to rape.
