Triple Talaq: Union Cabinet clears the bill

In a recent development, the Union cabinet has cleared a bill that Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 which makes criminalizes the Islamic practice of instant triple talaq an offense.

In the month of August, the apex court has said in a historic hearing that the uttering of “talaq” three times, for giving divorce to their spouse which will be considered as unconstitutional.

It was reported that the bill has the provision for giving the punishment for this form of divorce.

According to sources, the law proposes a three-year jail term for the husband.

While Supreme Court has banned the practice of instant triple talaq in its verdict.

The apex court has termed this practice as “unconstitutional”.

It was learned that the members of the parliament are expected to vote on the bill in the ongoing winter session.

While giving a statement, a law ministry official said, “Before the judgment this year, there were 177 reported cases of Talaq-e-biddat. Since then, there have been 67. These are only reported cases, the actual figure could be much higher”.
