Tripura: Journalist killed while covering clash between rival parties

In a horrific incident, a journalist working with a local news channel was allegedly brutally attacked and killed by tribal party cadres in Tripura on Wednesday.

It was reported that the incident took place in the sight of ongoing clashes between the two rival tribal associations in Mandwai.

The journalist was identified as Santanu Bhowmick, who was working with Dinrat news channel.

Officials said the journalist was reportedly hit from behind when he was covering the agitation and road blockade.

A police official said in a statement, “Police resorted to lathi-charge and dispersed the mob in Mandai as they assembled there violating the prohibitory orders. The IPFT members killed journalist Shantanu Bhowmik, 28, during the melee. Police later recovered his body and brought it to government-run Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital”.

Officials told the media that he was found with several wounds on his body when he was transferred to the local hospital.
