A woman in Kolkata finally got justice after 4 years when the police arrested her former boyfriend who threw acid in her face in September 2014.
Though she could not save her face, she saved her strength to get the justice.
The accused Soumen Saha threw the acid on her face when she was going to a local shop in Dumdum with her mother.
The attacker stopped her and threw the acid on her face that ate up her skin as he felt immense pain. She also lost one of her eyes in the incident. Both the victim and her mother struggled their ways out.
Her mother, widow by then had to take loans to protect her child.
A case was lodged with the police but the investigation did not progress much.
An NGO that helps acid attack survivors contacted and stood by her since then. With their help, Sanchayita was able to lodge a case in the Calcutta high court alleging police inaction.
The probe of the case began in 2017. Her statements were recorded before a judicial magistrate court.
“A lot of time had elapsed by then and it was becoming very difficult to nab the attacker. But we managed to arrest the man from Sonarpur on Sunday night.” Said an officer at Dum Dum police station.
“It’s not only the physical attack but the social stigma towards the victim which I had to endure,” said Sanchayita. Her strength came after she came to know the problems of others which were even bigger.
