Argentina’s flamboyant player Lionel Messi has been debarred for four games by FIFA after ruling that he had insulted an assistant referee in a World Cup qualifying game against Chile last week.
The Barcelona superstar has also been fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($10,160) by FIFA’s disciplinary community.
FIFA issued a statement in which it is stated that “ Messi has been found guilty of violating art. 57 of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee (FDC) for having directed insulting words at an assistant referee.
The statement further added, “This decision is in line with the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s previous rulings in similar cases.”
Following the ban, Messi is going to miss four of Argentina’s remaining five World Cup qualifiers, including Bolivia Uruguay, Venezuela, and Peru.
But he could return for Argentina’s final qualifier game in Ecuador on October 10.
