Arsenal claimed an impressive 2-0 win over AC Milan in the first leg of the Europa League last 16 at San Siro on Thursday. It eased a lot of pressure on under-fire manager Arsenal Wenger.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan started the scoring in the 15th minute to help Arsenal lead 1-0. He scored his first goal for the club. Later, Aaron Ramsey struck the second goal in the 45+4’ to make it 2-0.

Arsenal had lost four consecutive games in a row. It increased the level of pressure on the manager. Wenger desperately needed a positive result.

Arsenal started brightly away from home but was lucky not to concede a penalty when Hakan Calhanoglou stayed on his feet despite appearing to have been fouled by Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina.

Just moments later Arsenal broke the deadlock, as Mesut Ozil fed Mkhitaryan to cut inside and fire in a shot that deflected past home keeper Gianluigi off Leonardo Bonucci. The gunners grew in confidence after that strike.

Earlier, Donnarumma prevented two goals each from Calum Chambers and Danny Welbeck.

With the loss, Milan lost their 13 games unbeaten run. The seven times European champions will have to do it all in the second leg that will take place after seven days.

Arsenal is 13 points behind top four in the premier league.

The win will help Gunners remain confident of performing well in the Champions League and try to win Europe’s second-tier competition for the first time.
