Chennai Super Kings head Coach Stephen Fleming told the media on Monday that MS Dhoni will play a prominent role as a batsman in this season’s IPL.
When questioned about Dhoni’s role as batsman, Fleming said, “MS will be relatively high. The time that we choose may depend on the match situation as well. He would definitely play a more prominent role as a batter.”
“Ahead of him there are some good picks, Kedar Jadhav, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo and Harbhajan Singh fits in there as well, Karn Sharma, they can all hit,” he added.
Fleming said that he the team has a number of multi-skilled players.
“One of the key things of the squad is the versatility…combinations are important..both Indian and overseas.”
On the opening place, he is yet to decide.
“It depends on the combination and conditions. We have got a number of options that have been penciled down. Vijay, Faf, Shorey, Watson, Billings, Rayudu…We have got six of them.
He also feels that they want new bowlers to effectively fill the role that Ashish Nehra and Albie Morkel did magnificently well in the past.
“Wood and Ngidi has got good pace. We have Indian quality in Thakur. Our strong component is spinners. Wood has a got nice skiddy trajectory and pace.”
In Ashwin’s absence, Fleming hopes to get the job done by Harbhajan.
“Excited to have Bhajji here, I have always rated him high. He will play a big part in the season.”
On Mitchell Santner’s replacement, who is out due to injury, Fleming said they are in no rush.
“We haven’t rushed for the replacement. If things go well in the tournament, we might not name a replacement.”
On yoyo-test, Fleming said, “The yo-yo test. No. It is very much into personal fitness. It is not the focus of the side. We have Greg King from South Africa, who is an outstanding trainer. All we ask for is continuation of the professionalism.”
The richest cricket league in the world, IPL will kick off on April 7.
