India thrash Sri Lanka by 304 runs in first Test match

Skipper Virat Kohli smashed his 17th Test century. Kohli’s unbeaten 103 helped India beat Sri Lanka by 304 runs on the fourth day of the first Test in Galle and take 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

India, who had a first-innings lead of 309 after centuries from Shikhar Dhawan (190) and Cheteshwar Pujara (153), dominated throughout the match.

Sri Lanka skipper Rangana Herath and Asela Gunaratne unable to bat because of injury, Sri Lanka subsided to 245 all out with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin scalped 3-wickets each.

Earlier, India declared their second innings at 240/3 on Day 4 of the 1st Test on Saturday, shortly after Virat Kohli brought up his 17th Test ton, to set 550-run target for hosts Sri Lanka.

The second Test begins at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on 3 August, where India will look to wrap up the three-match series.

Shikhar Dhawan is the Man of the Match for his comeback knock of 190 in the first innings.
