Indian Wells: Federer, Serena wins; Djokovic loses

World number 1 Roger Federer defeated Federico Delbonis 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) to advance to the third round at Indian Wells on Sunday.

He defeated Delbonis in just an hour in the Sunday afternoon.

Federer said,” It’s been a long time since I have been interrupted at night and have to come back the next day.”

The title defense went up to a soggy start as play got suspended on multiple occasions due to rain showers on Saturday.

Federer who is making his 17th appearance in Indian Wells will continue to win remain number one if he progresses to the semi-finals. The win extended his 2018 win streak to 13 matches. He has only dropped 3 of 34 sets this year.

He will face Filip Krajinovic in the third round.

Djokovic loses

Novak Djokovic who along with Federer came to win the sixth Indian Wells tournament lost to Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel. Daniel defeated Djokovic 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-1 in the hard-fought victory.

He accepted his lack of composure during the game.

“For me it felt like first match I ever played on the tour. Very weird,” Djokovic said. “I mean,  I just completely lost rhythm, everything.

“Just struggled also a bit with the health the last couple of weeks.” He added.

Daniel who ranks 109th in the world also advanced to the third round. He will face Gael Monfils in the next match.

Earlier Serena Williams made her comeback in the Indian Wells after January 2017 Australian Open final. She defeated Bertens 7-6 (7/5), 7-5. Her elder sister Venus thrashed world No. 35 Sorana Cirseta 6-3, 6-4 in just 79 minutes.
