India’s all formats Cricket Captain Virat Kohli will play for English top county Surrey this June, the county officially announced the deal today on the official website.
It stated- “Surrey County Cricket Club are delighted to announce the signing the signing of India captain Virat Kohli for the month of June.”
Speaking after the signing for the club, Kohli said, “It has long been an ambition of mine to play county cricket and I am thankful to Alec Stewart and Surrey for allowing me the opportunity to join them during their 2018 season. I can’t wait to get to the Kia Oval.”
Kohli who will be playing three county championship matches in June is all set to miss the historic first-ever Test match between India and Afghanistan scheduled in Bengaluru from June 14-18. He will make his county debut against Hampshire on June 9.
India will tour England in July this year.
The 29-year-old will become the fourth Test eligible Indian player in county cricket this year. Cheteshwar Pujara currently plays for Yorkshire. Among bowlers, Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron play for Sussex and Leicestershire respectively. Axar Patel too is supposed to play for Durham in August.
Since his Test debut in 2011, the middle-order batsman has scored over 5500 runs in the five-day game. When it comes to Captaincy, Kohli has led his country to the top of the ICC rankings with 21 Test wins from 34 matches.
He averages over 50 in all three formats of the game and is just 412 runs away from completing his 10,000 ODI runs.
