Jesse Lingard

Manchester United defeated Chelsea to reclaim the second position in English Premier League at home (Old Trafford) on Sunday. Jesse Lingard provided a header to help Jose Mourinho’s side get to second place in the league table.

Earlier, Chelsea started the scoring to lead with a 32nd-minute goal from David William. Romelu Lukaku hit the equalizer in the 39th minute as both sides were 1-1 at half-time.

Jesse Lingard scored the winner in 75th minute of the second half to help Man United take a two-point lead over Liverpool. With 10 games to go, United are now with 59 points in 28 matches while Chelsea dropped to fifth place with 53 points.

Both teams earlier played in the Champions League this week against Barcelona and Sevilla so tiredness was not an excuse.

The race for the second, third, fourth and fifth remains open in the premier league. Manchester City sealed the first place with their dominant performance. They have a 13 point lead over Man United.

It is not special because it is Chelsea, it is very special as we beat the champions, who are a fantastic team, who are very difficult to beat and because this is the three points that keep us in second place, which is the place we are fighting for,” said Jose Mourinho.

He also added that it opens a little gap, not much to Chelsea, and it is a very important result for us. It feels special as the players gave everything. It is not possible to win against a team with the quality of Chelsea without the quality we gave.

Conte said: “We had a great chance to get a good result against Manchester United, but instead we talk about a defeat.

“You must be the best team at the end of the game, not just in the first half. We had a great chance to take three points here. Now we have to start to work this season as the league is very difficult and we need to fight for a place in the Champions League. I hope the players realize this soon.”
