Japan’s Naomi Osaka pulled Serena Williams out of the MiamiOpen by defeating her in straight sets on Wednesday.

Osaka who won her major title in Indian Wells last weekend beat the former World No.1 6-3, 6-2. She took just one hour and 17 minutes to defeat Serena.

Serena was playing her fourth game after her comeback from 13 months of maternity leave. It seems it will be tougher than expected for Serena to gain her natural ground.
Earlier she made her comeback in Indian Wells where she made it to the third round but lost to her sister Venus Williams in straight sets.

It was always going to be a tough task for Serena to overcome Osaka and it did.

Serena refused to speak to the media after her loss. The World Tennis Association (WTA) will decide to fine her or not, if penalized she could be charged $1000.

She released a brief statement 90 minutes prior to the match. It said,” Every tournament is an opportunity for me to better understand the areas I need to improve to be my best.

“Naomi played a great match and I look forward to continuing my return by progressing every day.

“I am grateful for my fans who continue to support me every step of this incredible journey.”

Osaka, on the other hand, was extremely delighted. She said,” I was nervous but once the match started I was OK.”

She will next face the World No. 4 Elina Svitolina in the second round.

“Serena is the main reason I started playing. I have seen her on TV so many times, so for me to be playing against her, trying to detach myself from the fact I was playing Serena, was hard. It took me three games (to get her head around it),” Osaka added.
