The incident took place in the wee hours of Wednesday morning where at least 19 children were killed after a blaze took place in a crowded children’s shelter.
The local daily reported that “It was learned that the clash began in a dormitory, where they set fire to the mattresses they sleep on, and the flames spread to the rest of the facility and they were not able to escape”.
It was learnt that all the children were aged between 14 and 17.
In a statement Anabella Morfin, Guatemala’s solicitor general said,”What happened is extremely serious, and even more so for the fact that it could have been avoided”.
