Bangladesh: 10 died in stampede in Chittagong city

As per the recent reports, at least 10 people reportedly died in a stampede during a funeral rite of a political leader near Chittagong city on Monday.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police has allegedly confirmed the death of 10 people in the mishap.

it was the procession of the former Mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury, who was a leader of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ruling Bangladesh Awami League party.

Chittagong Police Commissioner Iqbal Bahar said in a statement, “It’s not that clashes broke out. There was no lack of security. People have been injured after falling on the ground in the crush of people”.

Police officials told the media that the toll could rise as many were critically injured in the accident.

It was learned that the stampede took place in Chittagong’s Rima Community Centre.

Officials said that, It was one of the 14 venues where the funeral ritual food was arranged.

City police chief Iqbal Bahar said, “So far we can confirm the death toll of 10 people”.

It was reported that most of the victims died of the suffocation.
