Demand to close Al- Jazeera: UN says ‘unacceptable attack’ on freedom of speech

The demand for Qatar to close down its Al Jazeera TV channel by Saudi Arabia and three other Arab nations is an “unacceptable attack” on the right to freedoms of expression and opinion, UN Commissioner for Human Rights said today morning.

The nations which demanded to close the Arabic news channel Al- Jazeera includes United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, UN Commissioner for Human Rights said in a statement, “Whether or not you watch it, like it, or agree with its editorial standpoints, Al Jazeera’s Arabic and English channels are legitimate, and have many millions of viewers. The demand that they are summarily closed down is, in our view, an unacceptable attack on the right to freedom of expression and opinion”.

It was reported that the four Arab nations which have given the 10-day deadline for implementing the decision, which will end on July 4.
