The apex court has pronounced its judgment on Friday, as aadhaar card is not compulsory for filing Income Tax returns.

It was reported that the Supreme Court has stayed the government’s order to make the Aadhaar card mandatory for PAN card holders.

It cannot be made compulsory for filing Income Tax returns, said the Supreme Court in its order.

The verdict was announced from the bench of judges comprising Ashok Bhushan and A K Sikri.

The apex court also said its statement that whosoever does not hold Aadhaar card will now not face criminal consequences for not linking PAN card with Aadhaar card.

However, the government earlier said that the move would eliminate fake and fraudulent financial accounts.
