Joe Root has been appointed England’s new Test Captain after Alastair Cook’s resignation on Monday.

Alastair Cook has stepped down as England’s test captain following the team’s  4-0 defeat to India with Joe Root taking over the job, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Saturday.

A statement from England and Wales Cricket Board said Root had accepted the appointment and quoted him as saying : “This is an exciting time for England cricket and I am honoured to have been asked to captain the Test team into a new era.”

Alastair Cook became England’s captain in August 2012 and led his country to Ashes victories on home soil in 2013 and 2015.
